Lauren Bucciero (Animal Behavior, 19) is combining the skills she is learning in both her major and minor at UNE for a volunteer writing job at the New England Primate Conservancy in Merrimac, Massachusetts.

Each month she will be researching different primates and writing profiles that detail their appearance, size, weight, geographic habitat and life span. The articles will appear on the conservancys website and Facebook page.

Her first assignment is the red-bellied lemur.

This is what I want to do. The position is really flexible, and Im able to do it while Im still in school, she said.

Bucciero says the articles will give her material to showcase her experience to potential employers.

They will be great for samples of my writing work. I will be able to show a potential employer this is what Ive done in the past, she said.

She recently added Writing as her minor at UNE.

Susan McHugh, Ph.D., professor and chair in the Department of English, says Buccieros writing impressed her right away.

Shes someone who has really high-level writing skills and that stuck out to me, said McHugh.

McHugh says its important for all students to be strong writers when they graduate, even if theyre not looking for writing jobs.

To get ahead in life you really do have to write about what youve been doing, she said.

Bucciero agrees.

Writing skills are something that a lot of employers look for, no matter what field you are in. Having strong writing skills is key to communication. Thats important in any career, she said.

Writing skills will be essential to Bucciero. Shes planning for a career in wildlife journalism.
