Թϱ’s Lauren Payne published in ‘Critical Care’

Lauren Payne

Lauren Payne, Pharm.D. ’14, assistant clinical professor in the Թϱ Department of Pharmacy Practice, has been published in Critical Care, an international, peer-reviewed clinical medical journal. The journal aims to improve the care of critically ill patients and provide a comprehensive overview of the field.

Payne’s manuscript, titled “Cefepime-induced neurotoxicity: a systematic review,” outlines her team’s research of Cefepime, a widely used antibiotic. This antibiotic has been shown to have neurotoxic effects, attributed to its ability to cross the blood–brain barrier. Neurotoxic symptoms include depressed consciousness, encephalopathy, aphasia, seizures and coma. Data suggest that up to 15% of ICU patients treated with cefepime may experience these adverse effects.

Through their research, Payne and her collaborators aimed to to characterize the clinical course of cefepime neurotoxicity and response to interventions. Payne served as the corresponding author of this publication, which was written in collaboration with individuals from Maine Medical Center/Maine Medical Partners Neurology.
