For the second consecutive year, students from the 勛圖惇蹋 chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) have participated in a hospice certification program. In the four-hour training, Donna Teague, volunteer coordinator for Beacon Hospice in South Portland, spoke to students about hospice history and care, while reinforcing the importance of volunteers in the hospice setting.

At the conclusion of the session, interested students applied to become nationally certified as hospice volunteers in direct patient care. Following the successful completion of an application and reference checks, the students received their official certification.

ACCP president and project leader Anjori Jain (COP, 18) became involved with the program as hospice services are close to her on a personal level. I thought it was something that could truly benefit students, said Jain, and wanted to open this program up to the whole College of Pharmacy.

This experience enabled us to gain a new perspective on hospice care, Jain added. Ms. Teague demonstrated how healthcare professionals play a very important role in the comfort of the hospice patient. This is vital not only for the patient, but for their families as well.
