Cathleen Miller, M.A., M.L.S., curator of the Maine Women Writers Collection, will present a lecture in conjunction with the , titled ā€œArtistā€™s Books as Teaching Tools.ā€

The lecture will be held Monday, September 11, at 4 p.m., at USMā€™s Glickman Family Library (University Events Room, 7th floor) at 314 Forest Avenue in Portland. Following the lecture, there will be an exhibition reception from 5 to 6 p.m. on the 6th floor, near Special Collections. Refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the public.

Millerā€™s lecture will focus on the potential and power of the artistā€™s book to engage students from many disciplines to think about how content and form influence one another. This form challenges our notions of what makes a book, what constitutes readership, and how we construct narratives, says Miller. All of these attributes create pathways to interdisciplinary discussions, making the artistā€™s book an innovative tool for teaching in the liberal arts, she explains.

Miller will provide examples from her own work with classes at the ³Ō¹Ļ±¬ĮĻ and other local universities and will highlight the vibrant collection of artistsā€™ books held by the Maine Women Writers Collection on ³Ō¹Ļ±¬ĮĻā€™s Portland Campus.
