Eight entering ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ freshmen, a junior and a senior publish collaborative article
As part of the NSF-funded (NSF Award Number 1259896) SUCCESS Boot Camp for STEM students held last week, eight entering ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ freshmen, a junior and a senior composed an article that has been published in an online journal. The , entitled "The Literate Surfer: A Critical Look at Surfer Discourse, the Definition of 'Kook,' and New Literacy Studies" appears in Language & Linguistics, a collection of articles edited by Arnold Sakhnov.
The class members included Alex Boucher ’15, Britany Chamberlain ’18, Amber Cusson ’18, Wyatt Eshleman ’18, Briana Goud ’18, Liam Kramer-White ’18, Katie Perry ’18, Megan Perry ’16, Alyssa Pobocik ’18 and Stephanie Soucy ’18.
Working with Michael J. Cripps, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of English, the students completed an academic reading and writing project as part of the English Composition component of Boot Camp. Over three days, they developed a critical reading of James Paul Gee's "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction" from the Journal of Education that they then applied to a representation of surfer culture offered by Brad Melekian in "Kook," an essay published in the Winter 2014 issue of The Surfer's Journal.
Working under the collaborative pen name Sam B. Awklamb, an acronym constructed from each contributor's first initial, the group submitted its work to Language & Linguistics where it was selected for publication.
