³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's Global Initiatives Program partners with Deering High School

³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ (³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ) Global Initiatives Program has forged a partnership with Deering High School in Portland that will make new learning opportunities available to Deering students and faculty.

As a result of the new partnership, Deering students will be able to attend lectures by international experts at UNE's Portland campus.  ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ students who have travelled abroad will also share their experiences with Deering students.  ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ faculty will provide professional development for Deering'\s staff on topics such as the importance of developing a global outlook.

"We are very fortunate to have a college program focusing on international affairs located just a short walk away," said Deering Principal Ira Waltz.  "Our students' education will be enriched by this partnership."

Anouar Majid, Ph.D., associate provost for global initiatives and founding director of the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's Center for Global Humanities, added that a real partnership between the two institutions is long overdue.  "³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ is committed to supporting all creative educational and cultural endeavors in our communities," Majid said.  "But in the case of Deering, it's just natural.  We have shared the same street - Stevens Avenue - for more than century.  We are now ready to share our global resources with our neighbors."

In the future, Deering students may be able to attend some ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ classes for college credit, and they may have opportunities to participate in ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's international travel programs, including ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's new campus in Tangier, Morocco.
