Anouar Majid interviewed by the Sun Chronicle on McArthur Library's Muslim Journeys lecture
Anouar Majid, Ph.D., ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ associate provost for global initiatives and director of the Center for Global Humanities, was interviewed at length for a Sun Chronicle feature on May 15th in regard to his May 16th talk at the McArthur Library in Biddeford.
Majid's talk, "America’s Gifts to Arabs," was the first of a series titled Muslim Journeys. The lecture series, along with a selection of materials the library has gathered on Islamic culture, is supported in part by McArthur Library's award of a National Endowment for the Humanities Muslim Journeys Bookshelf grant. Majid has assisted the library on the project.
Asked why it’s important for the library to have the Muslim Journeys materials available for public use, Majid said: "we need to rethink American-Muslim relations away from the heat and passions of the moment and take a longer look at both histories. The United States was at its best when it helped build institutions in the Middle East. I am proud that the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ is now doing the same."
Majid is the author of five critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West, including Islam and America: Building a Future without Prejudice, and a novel, Si Yussef, which has been the focus of much scholarly and critical interest. He is the editor of the magazine TingisRedux.
