The Dr. Michael Whalon Research Collection donated to ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's Special Collections
Peter and Ros Whalon, residents of Kennebunkport, donated the Dr. Michael W. Whalon Civil War Research Collection to the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ's Special Collections Department. The collection contains research materials and outlines a full-length book on the life and impact of Civil War General Philip Sheridan, including a complete Civil War bibliography.
Dr. Michael W. Whalon served as the associate director of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin and as a former vice provost at the University of Tulsa. Dr. Whalon was a well-respected teacher, scholar, and administrator whose first priority was teaching undergraduate students, and whose passion for the Civil War career of General Philip Sheridan led to a lifetime of scholarly research. Dr. Whalon died in 1990 while preparing his work on Sheridan.
³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ will transfer the archival collection into acid-free containers and create a standardized catalog record which will be accessible on the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ website and on the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ online catalog. One of the important uses of special collections is their capacity to demonstrate good scholarship through examples of properly conducted research, whether in the humanities or in sciences. This collection demonstrates careful and complete research methods.
The collection will be housed in Biddeford and will be accessible to faculty and students looking for such research materials, and to the public through the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Library Services Department.
